Why knees get stiff with age — and what's actually happening inside the joint

The short answer

A healthy joint moves on two things: smooth cartilage and slippery synovial fluid. With age, cartilage slowly thins and the fluid loses some of its key lubricant, hyaluronan — so joints feel stiffer, especially after rest.
